Local Doctor Weighs Risk Of Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is taking off in popularity and now, the procedure is offered at local beauty parlors, spas in addition to doctor’s office .
While there is no doubt laser hair removal is a popular procedure, whether it is always safe is another question.
The Society for Dermatologic Surgery reports a 45% increase in botched laser treatments and nearly 80% of new laser devices are sold to non-dermatologists and non-plastic surgeons.
Heidi Fincham said she is tired of plucking, shaving and waxing unwanted underarm hair.
She said, “You know, girls like to do……things that make them feel good, wear cute clothes without having to worry about hair and shaving.”
Fincham is having a series of laser hair removal treatments to get rid of unwanted hair and is among a growing number of Americans doing so.
Dr. Brian Biesman warns patients there are risks.
He said, “It does tend to be a buyer’s beware type of market and I really encourage consumers to do their research to ask about experience and word of mouth referrals are always good.”
Risks include burns, scarring and even permanent staining of the skin.
Dr. Biesman said, “I encourage consumers to be educatedconsumers and to really think about fillers and injectables and laser treatments almost as you would regular surgery.”
While laser hair removal can be extremely safe, do your homework first. Ask the person about their level of training, experience and side effects.
Fincham’s experience was a pleasant one.
She said, “It didn’t take long at all, just a matter of minutes. It didn’t really hurt at all.”
Patients undergo a series of treatments until they reach the desired affect but laser hair removal is not for everyone.
If you have gray or very light hair, theprocedure probably won’t work for you and according to some doctors, you should also not get laser hair removal if you are heavily sunburned or suntanned.
A non-doctor’s office will often entice customers with lower prices but while cost is important, Dr. Biesman suggests you let quality drive your decision, not just the finances.
